Paste MCP privacy and access
Paste MCP runs locally on your Mac. It lets approved AI tools connect to Paste through a built-in local MCP server, so they can use your clipboard history as context when you ask them to.
Your clipboard history stays under your control.
How Paste MCP works
When MCP is enabled, Paste runs a local MCP server on your Mac. AI tools can connect to Paste only after you approve access.
Once connected, the AI tool can work with Paste through that approved connection. For example, you can ask it to:
Find notes you copied today.
Look for research links saved in Paste this week.
Search for items related to a project.
Create or update pinboards, when supported by the connected tool.
Paste does not share clipboard history with AI tools on its own. The AI tool needs to request context through the connection you approved.
What connected tools can access
Approved AI tools can work with the Paste items and pinboards available through MCP.
This may include clipboard history, copied items, links, files, screenshots, and pinboards on your Mac.
What happens next may depend on the AI tool you use. Some tools may send your request to their own model provider, so it is worth reviewing the privacy settings of each connected tool.
Manage connected tools
You can review connected AI tools in Paste settings at any time.
From there, you can:
See which tools are connected.
Remove access when you no longer need it.
Turn off MCP if you do not want AI tools to connect to Paste.
Custom tools
If you connect Paste to a custom MCP tool, keep your server details and token private. Anyone with access to those details may be able to connect to Paste while MCP is enabled. Only connect tools you trust.
