Paste

Paste crashes, quits, or won't launch

If Paste won't open, has no menu-bar icon, quits on its own, or crashes often, the steps below resolve most cases. Work through them in order, and check whether Paste is running again after each one.

Update to the latest version

Many crashes are already fixed in a newer release, so start here.

Make sure you are running the latest version of Paste for Mac. Update from the channel you installed Paste through, then launch Paste again.

Make sure Paste stays running in the background

Paste runs in the background so it can save everything you copy. If background running is off, macOS can terminate Paste, which looks like Paste quitting on its own or never showing up.

  • Open Paste Settings → General.

  • Turn on Run in background.

  • Quit Paste with Command-Q, then launch it again.

After relaunching, look for the Paste icon in the menu bar. You can also open or hide the Paste window with Shift-Command-V.

Check that Paste is set to launch

If Paste does not appear after you log in, confirm that macOS is allowed to start it.

  • Open System Settings → General → Login Items and check that Paste is listed and enabled.

  • In Paste Settings → General, make sure Open at login is turned on.

If Paste still does not launch at startup, see Paste doesn't launch on system startup.

Collect diagnostics so we can help

If Paste keeps crashing or won't launch after the steps above, capturing what happens lets us pinpoint the cause faster.

  • Choose Start Diagnostics.

  • Reproduce the issue so it's captured while diagnostics are running.

  • Choose Stop and Copy Logs.

When you contact us, send the logs along with these details:

  • Which version of Paste you are using, and how you installed it (App Store, website, or Setapp).

  • Your macOS version.

  • A description of what you were doing when Paste crashed, and any steps you have already tried.

  • If macOS showed a crash report, include it as well.

We'll review the logs and help you get Paste running again.
